History
RIT Ambulance receives its right to function from the New York State Department of Health, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and the Student Health Center. It originated from the Student Safety Unit. In 1981, the Student Safety Unit became a certified ambulance corps known as RIT Emergency Medical Unit and is now known as RIT Ambulance. Membership is open to all students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
RIT Ambulance is a New York State Certified Ambulance Corps and a member of the National Collegiate EMS Foundation (NCEMSF). We have a fleet of 2 vehicles; one certified ambulance and one secondary vehicle, used as a first response unit.
RIT Ambulance responds to all emergencies on RIT property including but not limited to the Residence Halls, academic areas, student union, and RIT Apartment complexes.
RIT Ambulance also carries a mutual aid agreement with Henrietta Volunteer Ambulance which allows RIT Ambulance to assist as a backup ambulance in certain parts of Henrietta, the neighboring town to RIT.
The types of calls we have run in the past two years include small cuts and bruises, motor vehicle accidents, diabetic reactions, seizures, poisoning, illnesses, fractures and dislocations, substance abuse resulting in life-threatening conditions, and sexual and physical assault.
The residential areas (residence halls and apartments), industrial areas (physical plant and mechanical labs), and recreational areas (fields, ice rink, weight rooms, and gyms) are the most common areas from which we receive calls.
RIT Ambulance is in service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the year except during Christmas break and times when the ambulance requires maintenance.
